Introduction

This Privacy Policy describes how Christopher Bouquet (“we,” “us,” or “our”) handles information in connection with FiveByFive, a word puzzle app for iOS and iPadOS, and its related support website at https://chrisb-apps.github.io/fivebyfive/.

Summary

FiveByFive does not require an account.
The app does not ask for your name, email address, or other contact information.
We do not sell your personal information.
If you have not unlocked the full game, the app shows a small cross-promotion ad from Kickstart Exchange; it does not track you across apps or build a behavioral profile, and it disappears for good once you unlock the full game. See Advertising (Kickstart Exchange) below.
Other than that ad network, we do not use analytics or cross-app tracking in the app.
We receive personal information only if you choose to contact us by email (including through the in-app feedback link) or through the optional website contact form.

Information the App Collects and Stores

FiveByFive stores the following information on your device, and may sync it through Apple iCloud Key-Value storage if iCloud is enabled on your device:

Game progress, such as your current level and completed levels
Timer results, best times, and streaks
App settings, such as timer mode, background style, and effects intensity
Whether the full game has been unlocked
Whether you have completed onboarding

This information is used to operate the app, save your progress, and optionally sync progress across your devices. We do not operate our own servers to store this information, and we cannot identify you from this data on our systems.

You can delete in-app progress at any time using Settings → Reset All Progress. Uninstalling the app removes local data from your device. Data stored in iCloud is managed through your Apple Account and iCloud settings.

Advertising (Kickstart Exchange)

If you have not unlocked the full game, FiveByFive shows a small cross-promotion ad for another independent app on the main menu screen, served by Kickstart Exchange. Once you unlock the full game, this ad is removed and never shown again.

Kickstart Exchange is designed to avoid tracking individual people. According to its privacy notice:

It does not track users or devices, and does not build behavioral profiles.
It does not use advertising identifiers or cross-app tracking mechanisms.
The information sent to request an ad is app-level, not personal: our API key, bundle identifier, platform, app and build version, SDK version, and (optionally) the App Store storefront country associated with the device’s store account.
To confirm an ad request comes from a genuine app install, the SDK reads a locally-verified, Apple-signed App Transaction and sends it once for verification. Kickstart Exchange discards this value immediately and does not retain, hash, log, correlate, target with, or analyze it.
Ad delivery and interaction records are kept for approximately 30 days and are not linked to a specific person or device.
It does not sell this information or build profiles of app users.

In-App Purchases

FiveByFive offers a one-time in-app purchase to unlock all puzzle levels after the first 10 free levels, which also removes the Kickstart Exchange ad described above. There is no subscription.

Purchases are processed by Apple through the App Store using StoreKit. We do not receive or store your payment card information. Apple may collect and process purchase-related information according to Apple’s Privacy Policy.

You can restore purchases through the app using your Apple Account.

Contacting Us

In-app feedback

The app includes a Send Feedback option that opens your email app with a pre-filled subject line and app version information. The app does not collect, store, or transmit your message.

If you choose to send the email, we receive the information included in that message, such as your email address and any personal information you choose to include. We use that information only to read and respond to your message.

Website contact form

Our website includes an optional contact form. If you choose to submit it, we collect the information you provide, such as:

Your email address
Your message

We use this information only to read and respond to your inquiry.

Form submissions are processed by Formspree and delivered to us by email. Formspree’s privacy policy is available at https://formspree.io/legal/privacy-policy/.

Contacting us is optional. You can use FiveByFive without contacting us or visiting the website.

Website Hosting

Our website is hosted on GitHub Pages. GitHub may process standard website access logs as part of providing hosting services. GitHub’s privacy statement is available at https://docs.github.com/en/site-policy/privacy-policies/github-general-privacy-statement.

Contact form submissions are processed by Formspree, not by GitHub Pages.

App Store Review Prompt

The app may ask you to rate or review FiveByFive using Apple’s standard in-app review prompt. This is controlled by Apple and is optional.

How We Use Information

We use information only for the following purposes:

App functionality: operating the game, saving progress, and applying settings
Sync and backup: optional iCloud sync across your devices
Purchases: managing access to the full game through Apple’s App Store
Advertising: showing a cross-promotion ad from Kickstart Exchange to players who have not unlocked the full game
Customer support: responding to emails or website contact form messages you choose to send us

We do not use your information for marketing profiles or cross-app tracking.

How We Share Information

We do not sell your personal information.

We share information only with service providers that help us operate the app or website:

Data Retention

Retention depends on the feature involved:

App data: kept on your device and, if enabled, in your iCloud account until you reset progress, delete the app, or remove the data through iCloud
Purchase records: managed by Apple through your Apple Account
Advertising records: Kickstart Exchange retains app-level ad delivery and interaction records for approximately 30 days; these are not linked to a specific person or device
Emails and contact form submissions: kept only as long as needed to respond to your inquiry, then deleted when no longer needed

Your Choices and Rights

Because FiveByFive does not use accounts, many requests can be handled directly by you:

Delete app progress: use Settings → Reset All Progress in the app
Remove local app data: delete the app from your device
Manage iCloud data: use your Apple Account and iCloud settings
Manage purchases: use your Apple Account and App Store purchase settings
Stop seeing the cross-promotion ad: unlock the full game, which removes it for good

International Data Transfers

If you use the app or website from outside the United States, your information may be processed in the United States or other countries where our service providers operate, including Apple, Kickstart Exchange, Formspree, and GitHub.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the updated version on this page and change the “Last updated” date above.
